Connecting and bonding as a team when at work isn't just about maintaining good colleague relations with your co-workers - it is much more. It is to be expected that office colleagues will bicker from time to time, but ultimately respect is something to be given and received by all parties.
This is why it is vital to incorporate team-building activities into your company calendar with the aim of allowing them to be a cohesive and supportive working team. Creating a harmonious staff environment is the key to a good office environment.
So I've come up with some tips and advice and if you give these methods a chance then perhaps your workers can achieve a stronger bond with the rest of your team.
1) Explain clearly the purposes of team building exercises If staff aren't clear on why they need to participate in team building activities they could think that you are bringing them together for assessment or redundancies. So ensure that you tell your staff the reasons for drawing them together in order to improve the dynamic in the office. By telling them the objectives clearly they may even loosen up and really give it their best when joining in games.
2) Team building is about having fun and removing colleagues from a stale work environment. It is to be expected that your employees could be scared about integrating with other or be concerned about performing to the best of their abilities. Don't forget to remind your staff, particularly those who are taking it too seriously, that it is only for fun. If you see a co-worker not having a fun time or looking like they feel out of place chat to them about their concerns and reassure them that it is okay to be nervous.
3) No matter what the task in hand, get all your staff involved. The team-boosting isn't just for the extroverts in the office it is for everybody, so do your best to make everyone feel involved. Make sure you choose activities that don't just have the loud ones volunteering. It is vital that all of your office feels like they are important or else the purpose of the day will not be fulfilled.
4) Don't be afraid to get a professional involved in the planning of your team building day. Companies have made it their business to organise team boosting activity days, so it might be a good idea to book an activity with them so you can concentrate on enjoying the day and motivating your team. Managers are also expected to get involved and set and example, remember that you are part of the team too and you want to be personable and approachable around your workers.
5) Be sure to leave time to reflect on how the day has gone. After you have finished the final activities for the day, gather your staff together have them pick out their favourite points and sum up their experience. What did they see as the most effective part of the day? Was there anyone your colleagues hadn't met prior to the team building day? Did they learn anything new from the team boosting exercises? Have they forged any stronger relationships as a result of the day? Would they like to suggest any ways the day could be improved?
So if your team could do with a day to bring them all together then why not think about a team building day? When my company relocated to Battersea office space our team bonding day worked wonders at bringing our company together. Why not give it a whirl?
