With a variety of manufacturers, models, types and sizes of trailers, are you baffled as to which one is for you? Here is a small introduction on some of the types of trailers and their uses, which will aid you in reaching a decision.

Usage

The first step is knowing what exactly you are going to use your trailer for and the type of trailer that suits your purpose. Here are a few types of trailers, read through to see which one meets your requirements.

Travel Trailers

These trailers can be towed by a small car, and are generally used for individual purposes. They are very useful for transporting items from one place to another. There are basically two types of travel trailers known as the Towable RVs and the Motorized RVs.

Semi Trailers

These trailers are used for commercial purposes. They are comparatively bigger and their capacity is much more. They need a van or truck to be towed.

Open or Enclosed Trailers

An open trailer will expose your cargo to the weather, you need to figure out if this is a feasible option or not for you. These are lighter as well as inexpensive compared to enclosed trailers, but do not provide adequate protection from the outside environment. Their price starts from $900 and higher, whereas the enclosed trailers are bulkier but provide adequate safety and protection to your cargo and start from $1500 and higher.

Motorcycle Trailers

These are basically designed to haul motorcycles behind trucks and vans, and maybe closed or open. They are often narrow and styled to match the appearance of the motorcycle they are intended to tow.

Livestock Trailer

As the name suggests, they are used to move livestock from one area to another. They are made with the animal's health and safety in mind. With proper ventilation and comfort, they differ in size, making sure the animals are not injured in transit.

Flatbed Trailers

This type is used to transport very heavy materials or cargo from place to place. To load or unload the material onto the trailer, a crane is required as it cannot be handled by an individual.

Tanker Trailer

These trailers are used when liquids needs to be transported. Maintaining and cleaning these trailers need to be done carefully, in order to avoid spilling of the liquid while in transit.

Size

Now that you know which type of trailer suits your needs the most, the next point to consider is the size. Determine how much of cargo you are planing to transport and its approximate weight. It is the weight of your cargo that will help you decide the size of trailer you need to purchase. The size, weight, length and height of the trailer need to be thought over.

Manufacturer

The manufacturer of the trailer is an important factor as well. Make sure you purchase the trailer only from a reputed manufacturer. This purchase is going to involve a lot of money and time, make sure it is the right one for you. Most of the manufacturers will have a decent warranty period, make sure yours has the best deal.

Distance

Ask yourself if you are just going to be hauling the cargo around the city or you will be traveling long distance. If you are going to be taking the trailer long distance you need to ensure that you have the exact safety equipment for the travel, such as extra tires, lights, stabilizers, door hold back latch etc.

Price

Some people opt for an open trailer thinking it will be more economical, remember that it will be an economical deal only if it suits your purpose. If you think it costs a lot, get rid of the additional features, such as extra shelves, lights etc. If you are unable to find one within your budget, keep looking and be patient. The price range will vary and you can easily find the trailer you are looking for.
