Has this unfortunate even ever happened to you? Auto thefts have become very common over the years and it is very frustrating and upsetting to know your car has been stolen. Here are some tips and guidelines for you to follow, in case such an unfortunate event does occur. As they say it is always better to be safe than sorry.
Is it really stolen?
The first thing you need to do is remain calm if you realize your car has been stolen. Take a long walk across the place you think you have parked and go over all the cars again. To your relief it may have been towed away or you may have forgotten where it is parked. Try to focus and remember where it was parked.
Call the police
Now that we have established that your vehicle really is stolen you need to call and alert the police. You will need to provide your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) number to help the police locate your vehicle. If you do not have your VIN number readily available, contact your insurance company or the bank that sanctioned your car loan, they are sure to have the number. When you call the police make sure you get the report number, you will need it later on. Here is the other information apart from the VIN that you will need -
1.The date, time and location of the car. That is where and when you saw it last.
2.The year, make and model of the car.
3.Your contact information.
4.The possibility of any identifying items inside the car should be reported as well, especially if they are valuable.
Insurance company
The next important step would be to call your insurance company. You need to give the same information to the agency along with the following -
1.The report number.
2.The police department where you filed your report.
3.Certificate of Title for the vehicle and the loan or lease paperwork.
Remember that most insurance companies cannot process a claim for vehicle theft unless a police report is filed first. Hopefully your car will be found as soon as possible. Make sure that you replace all the locks of your car, as a stranger has entered it and probably still have access to it.
Here are some tips to follow to be on the safer side and prevent your car from being stolen -
1.Never leave your car unlocked, remember all car thieves are smart and know all the tricks to look for your spare keys. Make sure you don't leave your spare keys or credit cards inside your car either. Don't forget to roll up your windows, and make sure you fix your windows if they are cracked. This makes it easier for thieves to enter.
2.Try to get personalized plates this makes them easier to locate. These cars are easy to spot; hence they are rarely stolen.
3.Never park in unattended lots, as cars that are left in unattended parking lots are more likely to be stolen. If possible try to park your vehicle under a streetlight or in a brightly lit area.
4.Avoid leaving any kind of identification inside your car; this may make the situation worse. If you leave your address or pone number in the car, the thief will have access not only to your car but also to your home.
5.Security devices such as a car alarm, steering lock, tracking devices or anything else is a must. All these devices will definitely help you out one day. Do not compromise on buying such products as they are made for your car's safety. A tracking device has gained a lot of praise as these devices allow the car to be tracked by satellite and can even alert the police if your car gets stolen. Another huge advantage of installing a tracking device in your car is that you will have a lower insurance premium.
If you live in a location where the crime rate is high, this is all the more reason for you to have installed these devices and take precautions. The devices may cost you some money, but you will be eternally grateful, if for some reason your car does get stolen.
